In this year of internship my typical day includes 90 minutes of commuting between Westminster and Evergreen, Colorado. It’s given me a finite window each day for active listening. The result of these listening sessions are below in the form of playlists. I utilize Apple Music as my main playlist tool, but if you’re not on their service you can also find these playlists on YouTube and Spotify.

This time in the car has reignited an old spiritual practice. Back in the 1980s and early 90s I spent a good amount of time listening to the weekly top 40 radio hits and recording my favorites to a cassette tape so that I could play them back on my walkman while mowing lawns. You might question whether top 40 hits (especially from the late 80s… anyone remember Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus”) can be part of a spiritual practice, but music to me is Spirit, especially when we do music in community. I recently listened to an interview of Audrey Assad. Toward the end of the interview Audrey references the healing power of communal music in her journey. The full interview is on the Liturgists site

As we “do” Advent together, here are the songs that are forming me. What songs and messages are forming and formational to you and your journey through this season?

Under the Mercy, Joel

A few years ago I made a huge playlist of tunes that I listen to throughout the Advent season. If you are enjoying the shorter playlists made for this 2019 Advent season, you likely enjoy the larger playlist as a soundtrack for the season. Sorry, it’s not on YouTube. Here are some easy links to the playlist of 111 Songs for the Season of Advent on Apple Music at http://bit.ly/apple2019advent and on Spotify at http://bit.ly/spotify2019advent.
